New guidelines suggest that all children under the age of 16 are treated with an application of fluoride varnish.

Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral found in many foods/ drinks eg: tea and fish. It is also found in drinking water in certain naturally fluoridated areas, but the quantity of fluoride varies from area to area. Toothpaste contains fluoride but it is useful to check the level of fluoride is no less that 1000 parts per million(ppm).

Fluoride helps strengthen tooth enamel, It is proven that it helps prevent decay in primary and permanent teeth.
Who can apply fluoride varnish?
Fluoride treatment can be applied by a dental professional who has had suitable training.
Who needs fluoride treatment?
Children under the age of 16 will be treated with fluoride varnish every six months. Children with a high caries risk will be invited to attend the practice every three months for additional fluoride treatments.
Adults with high caries risk will also be treated.
